Wondrous Sampo
06:39
|
|||
[Verse 1]
O thou daring son of Lempo,
Best of all my friends and comrads,
Well examine the horizon,
Whether clear or filled with sorrow.
[Chorus A x2]
Clear the sky appears,
But behind a dark horizon;
In the north a cloud has risen,
And a longer still is near.
[Verse 2 x2]
Art thou speaking truth,
I am fearful of the war-ships
Of Pohyola quick pursuing;
Look again with keener vision.
[Chorus B]
I will never share the Sampo,
Not with thee thy child of Lempo,
Not with wicked Lemminkainen,
Not with thee old Vainamoinen!
[Chorus A x2]
Clear the sky appears,
But behind a dark horizon;
In the north a cloud has risen,
And a longer still is near.
[Verse 3]
Not a Laplander can banish
Vainamoinen and his people;
Never can a Turyalander,
Drive my tribes from Kalevala!
[Chorus B]
I will never share the Sampo,
Not with thee thy child of Lempo,
Not with wicked Lemminkainen,
Not with thee old Vainamoinen!

[Kullervo]
Come my dear,
Come lay with me,
Upon my furs,
Amongst my plenty.
Give me thy honor,
Child of such beauty,
As I tell,
Of my folly.
I am he,
Kalervo's child,
Hapless son of cold misfortune,
Tell me now of thine own kin.
[Kullervo's sister]
Lost child of error!
I am of thy own!
The forsaken one,
Lost within the wooded mountain,
Cried unto the hills,
I beseeched them for their guidance,
Called in wailing tones,
And the woodlands gave this answer.
[The hills]
Call no longer,
Foolish virgin,
All thy cries and tears are useless,
Far away thy home and kin.
[Kullervo]
The darkness, falling
To her doom,
A sin most evil,
Her fate is my own...

Let Them Perish
05:35
|
|||
[VERSE 1]
Omnipresent God of mercy,
Thou who livest in the heavens,
Hasten hither, thou art needed
Hasten to thine ailing children,
To observe, their
cruel tortures, fell diseases,
Drive destruction from our borders.
That I may subdue these evils.
[CHORUS]
Ukko, thou who art in heaven,
Help me slay Wainola's people
With thine iron-hail of justice,
With thine arrows tipped with lightning.
[VERSE 2]
Or from sickness let them perish,
Let them die the death deserving;
Let the men die in the forest,
And the women in the hurdles.
Come to me, Oh
God of mercy, lend thy presence,
Drive away these fell diseases,
Banish them to the unworthy.
[BRIDGE]
Take them in thy copper vessel,
Hurl them to thy boiling caldron.
[CHORUS]
Ukko, thou who art in heaven,
Help me slay Wainola's people
With thine iron-hail of justice,
With thine arrows tipped with lightning.
[OUTRO]
With thine arrows tipped with lightning
Let them die the death deserving!

Feast of the North Farm
05:43
|
|||
[Verse 1]
Shall we now begin the singing,
Sing the songs of old tradition?
Singers can but sing their wisdom,
And the cuckoo call the spring-time,
[Verse 2]
And the goddess of the heavens
Only dyes the earth in beauty;
So the goddesses of weaving
Can but weave from dawn till twilight,
Ever sing the youth of Lapland
In their straw-shoes full of gladness,
When the coarse-meat of the roebuck,
Or the blue-moose has been eaten.
[Verse 3]
Who shall first be sung and lauded?
Shall it be the bride or bridegroom?
Let us praise the bridegroom's father,
Let the hero-host be chanted,
Him whose home is in the forest,
Him who built upon the mountains,
Him who brought the trunks of lindens,
With their tops and slender branches.
Now I praise the genial hostess,
Who prepares the toothsome dinner,
Fills with plenty all her tables,
Bakes the honeyed loaves of barley,
Kneads the dough,
With magic fingers arms of beauty,
Brews the beer
From hops and barley,
Wheat-malt honey.
Neither did she,
Let the barley sprout too freely,
Lest the beer should,
Taste too bitter in the brewing.
[Verse 4]
Now the bridegroom has been lauded,
I will praise the young bride's playmate,
Day-companion in her childhood,
In the maiden's magic mansion
[Verse 5]
Like the hoar-frost of the morning,
Like the welcome dawn of spring-time,
Like the rising of the daylight.
Dressed in white are all the maidens.
For the friends that were invited,
For the guests in joy assembled.
All the friends have now been lauded,
Each has gained his mead of honor.

Amidst the Waves
03:12
|
|||
[VERSE 1]
Fool am I and great my folly,
Having neither wit nor judgment;
Surely once I had some knowledge,
Had some insight into wisdom.
[CHORUS x2]
Now my virtues all have gone
In these mournful days of evil,
Vanished with my youth and sense,
All my prudence gone to others!
[VERSE 2]
Aino, whom I love and cherish
All these years have sought to honor
Aino, now Wellamo's maiden,
Promised bride of mine forever,
[CHORUS x1]
Now my virtues all have gone
In these mournful days of evil,
Vanished with my youth and sense,
All my prudence gone to others!
[VERSE 3]
Caught her in Wellamo's grotto,
Led her to my boat of copper,
With my fish-line made of silver;
But alas I could not keep her.
Now too late to woo and win her;
Let her slip between my fingers
To the home of water-maidens
To the kingdom of Wellamo
[OUTRO]
What has changed the cuckoo's calling?
Sorrow must have stilled his singing,
As I hear him sing no longer,
As I hear him sing no more.

Väinämöinen
06:43
|
|||
[VERSE]
Suns will rise and set in Suomi,
Rise and set for generations,
When the North will learn my teachings,
Will recall my wisdom-sayings,
Hungry for the true religion,
Then will Suomi need my coming,
Watch for me at dawn of morning,
That I may bring back the Sampo,
[CHORUS]
Bring anew the harp of joy,
Bring anew the golden moon,
Bring anew the silver sun,
Peace and plenty to the North.
